The process starts with a consultation that can take place over the phone, face to face, via video, email or in a coffee shop - whatever suits you best they will work to. Once they have got to know you, your budget, timescale, your likes and dislikes they apply their expert knowledge and create a selection of jewellery designs for you to choose from. These designs can also incorporate any personal or sentimental jewellery that you might like to include. Once the design is chosen they then make any final adjustments, finishing touches or further personalisations, the design is sent to Dubai where it is crafted. It’s then sent back to Alicia J HQ with a diamond or gemstone report from GIA, care instructions and complimentary valuation before being unveiled to you! Trained jeweller and silversmith Alexander O’Neill began producing his own knives for his kitchen, blending traditional skills and clean, modern aesthetics. After posting on social media, demand for commissions was so high that Alexander founded Gorse Knives. This was back in 2016 and since then the company has gone from strength to strength. Gorse Knives use Aogami Super Blue steel for their knives, considered the best high carbon steel for knife making because of its high levels of carbon, chromium and tungsten. This allows for extreme sharpness and a silky smooth cut. Handles are made from hard woods and a water buffalo horn bolster provides abrasion resistance and keeps the knife balanced.
Grant Macdonald | Silversmith
The company’s founder, Grant Macdonald, began his career as a silversmith in 1949, aged just 14. There is a joke that although he was not born with a silver spoon, he learnt to make his own very early in life. He established his own business Grant Macdonald in 1969 in Southwark that still operates from the same site. After opening, the business’s reputation for outstanding workmanship and innovative designs quickly grew, and they found themselves constantly producing bespoke works and luxury retail pieces for London’s famous Bond Street and Mayfair retailers soon after its inception. It did not take long for Grant Macdonald to establish itself as the London elite’s primary silversmith. By the 1980s, the business’s reputation had grown to a global scale and Grant Macdonald began working internationally, from Cartier’s boutique in New York to Hong Kong’s luxury hotels. Founded in 1835, Holland & Holland started with a London Tobacconist, Harris Holland, becoming noticed for his skills as a fine competition pigeon shot. Maggs Bros | Bookstore
First established in 1853, this venerable antiquarian bookstore is an essential port of call for serious bibliophiles. They are one of the world's oldest and largest dealers in antiquarian, first edition, autographed copies and rare books. It is estimated that Maggs’s huge inventory consists of over 100,000 titles, although no one has ever made a precise count. To put this in context, placed end to end their bookshelves would measure two miles in total. Books are helpfully divided into six useful categories: Continental, Early British, Military & Naval, Modern, Natural History and Travel Books. Maggs are serious about books without being stuffy and their expert staff are capable of satisfying a wide range of enquiries.
