Peter Harrington | Rare Bookstore
Since it was founded in 1969, this book shop has risen to become at the heart of the London bookselling world. Stocking fine books, prints, maps and manuscripts from the 15th to the 20th century, this shop is home to some fascinating works. The UK’s largest antiquarian bookseller, this shop buys and sells antique books across all genres. Notable works sourced include Shakespeare’s first folio from 1623, Virginia Woolf’s pocket engagement diaries for eight years, including that for the final year of her life, and the first copy ever bound of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. Situated inside a four-story double fronted shop on Fulham Road in Chelsea, the shop is worth a visit for the premises alone. Losing oneself among the seemingly endless rows of old books is incredibly enjoyable. There are over 20,000 volumes and 6,000 prints for sale here. Peter Harrington have also recently opened a second shop on Dover Street. This slightly smaller shop stocks over 7,000 books.

Sotheby's | Auction House
This veritable London institution really needs no introduction. A world leading auction house for nearly 250 years, in its time many of the world’s finest pieces have been sold here. As well as auctions, Sotheby’s hosts fabulous exhibitions of international art. These exhibitions are as diverse as the art sold in its auction rooms, ranging from the antiquarian to the contemporary with plenty of room for everything in between. The entrance on New Bond Street leads you into a large, spacious gallery that spreads over several floors. Visitors will be impressed by the breadth of pieces on display, testament to Sotheby’s position at the core of the modern art scene. In addition to the galleries and auction rooms, there is a restaurant and a café that serves delicious food, perfect after a long morning browsing some outstanding artwork. Visiting Sotheby’s, whether for an auction or a browse of its galleries, is an experience to be savoured.

Spink & Son | Auction House
A Mr John Spink founded a goldsmiths and pawnbrokers near Lombard Street in the time of King Charles II. Over the years, the firm gravitated towards selling jewelry and coins, and began to deal in oriental art in the 1850s. Today, Spink’s auctions attract a huge variety of buyers, ranging from overseas investors to passionate private collectors. Spink attracts buyers from every country, in particular China, India and America. They continue to uphold a long tradition of expertise and client service. They claim that “no-one else in the field of collectibles offers such a broad range of services to the collector or to those seeking advice on disposing of single items or a collection.” Although this may be a bold statement, it is also an accurate one. Spink truly is the epicentre of the global collectibles market.

The Old Cinema
When this former cinema was on the verge of demolition by a supermarket chain, a couple of local antique dealers obtained the freehold and converted it into an antique department store in 1979. 40 years later and it is still going strong, continuing to inspire visitors with its eccentric mix of furniture and accessories. The store’s stock is incredibly diverse, testament to their expert buyers who pour over products from across the world and select only the finest. The ever-changing and wide-ranging inventory is perfect for those looking to bring something a little different to their home. The Old Cinema’s selections have found their way onto the set of Hollywood movies, into exclusive hotels, fine restaurants and bakeries, trendy bars and boutiques as well as celebrity homes and castles. Despite their growing size and global appeal, The Old Cinema remains a family business.
