Hatchards is officially London’s oldest bookshop. Established in 1797 by a Mr John Hatchard, the bookshop is a landmark on Piccadilly, itself one of the most famous streets in the world. For over 200 years the shop has served the literary, political, artistic and social lions of its day. In the past, the shop had strong ties to Europe’s Royal households. And although many of their former patrons may no longer sit on their thrones, the shop maintains close links with the British Royal Family. The bookshop is one of a select few that hold all three Royal Warrants.

Founded in 1835, Holland & Holland started with a London Tobacconist, Harris Holland, becoming noticed for his skills as a fine competition pigeon shot. Holland never looked back; as over the next 30 years with the help of nephew Henry William Holland, he went on to start what would become one of the most exclusive gun-making companies in Britain. Holland & Holland thrived during the rest of the 19th century, acquiring Royal Warrants from King George V and the King of Italy, and adopting the title of ‘royal’ for their best guns. Now situated in Bruton Street, Mayfair, Holland and Holland have enjoyed a long, illustrious career as one of the top gun-makers in the business through the 20th and 21st century; well-earned respect that is still in place today.

Since it was founded in 1969, this book shop has risen to become at the heart of the London bookselling world. Stocking fine books, prints, maps and manuscripts from the 15th to the 20th century, this shop is home to some fascinating works. The UK’s largest antiquarian bookseller, this shop buys and sells antique books across all genres. Notable works sourced include Shakespeare’s first folio from 1623, Virginia Woolf’s pocket engagement diaries for eight years, including that for the final year of her life, and the first copy ever bound of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. Situated inside a four-story double fronted shop on Fulham Road in Chelsea, the shop is worth a visit for the premises alone. Losing oneself among the seemingly endless rows of old books is incredibly enjoyable. There are over 20,000 volumes and 6,000 prints for sale here. Peter Harrington have also recently opened a second shop on Dover Street. This slightly smaller shop stocks over 7,000 books.
