16 May - 24 August 25
Glyndebourne Festival Opera
A summer-long luxury cultural experience: world-class opera staged on a country estate. Performances run May 16 through August 24, 2025, with a repertoire from Wagner to Mozart.
Overview: Equally famous for its long dining interval and black-tie picnic tradition as for the opera. Guests explore the manicured grounds during the 90-minute interval for champagne picnics or dine at on-site restaurants.
Tickets: Priority booking goes to Glyndebourne members; public tickets open in early March. Prices vary by production and seating (£100 up to several hundred for prime seats). Consider booking a “Leisure Plan” or dining package to secure a restaurant reservation with your tickets.
Travel Tips: Glyndebourne is near Lewes; direct trains from London Victoria to Lewes take about 1 hour. A private shuttle coach runs from Lewes Station to Glyndebourne. Driving is also popular (approx. 1.5 hours from London) – ample free parking on-site. Many patrons bring their own picnic tables, complete with candelabra and silverware, to set up on the lawn.
Dress Code: Formal evening dress is traditional. Men wear black tie (tuxedo) and women wear full-length or cocktail gowns. While Glyndebourne notes “there are no rules” and you should dress as you feel comfortable, nearly everyone embraces the elegance (the opera house even provides changing rooms so you can travel casually and change into formalwear on-site ).
Insider Tip: Arrive when gates open (usually two hours before curtain) to stroll the gardens and even visit the art exhibits on site. Pre-book your dining or picnic – the coveted Fortnum & Mason picnic hampers can be ordered in advance and collected on arrival. Lastly, watch for the daily “Royal visit” during some performances – members of the royal family occasionally attend incognito, given Glyndebourne’s storied patronage.
