About Goodman Gallery | Contemporary South African Art

Goodman Gallery was founded in 1966 and has since been instrumental in shaping contemporary South African art. During the apartheid era, the gallery brought Lisa Brice, David Goldblatt, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Sam Nhlengethwa and Sue Williamson to the world's attention for the first time. Since Liza Essers became owner and director in 2008, the gallery's roster has expanded to include more than 30 international artists, with a focus on women from the African diaspora and beyond.

The gallery's public programming, publishing, and education projects show that it cares about social justice and activism. Goodman Gallery has a legacy of supporting NGOs in the healthcare sector and advocating for human rights in South Africa, raising over R25 million (£1.4 million) for charities such as Orange Babies, Red Cross, and the Witkoppen Health and Welfare Clinic.

In 2019, Goodman Gallery will open a new location in London. This is part of its mission to challenge the most common stories about history, contribute to the discussion of contemporary art, and help fix society. Goodman Gallery is one of the most important voices in the world of contemporary art. It has a global program that deals with issues of identity, representation, and social justice.
