Savile Row has been the world capital of bespoke tailoring for over 200 years. The street and its immediate surroundings house the finest cutters, tailors, and shirtmakers in the world — craftsmen and craftswomen who create garments entirely by hand, fitted to the individual body over multiple fittings.
Commissioning a Savile Row suit is one of the great London experiences. It's also, for many, an intimidating prospect. This guide covers everything you need to know — from what to expect at your first consultation to understanding the difference between bespoke, made-to-measure, and ready-to-wear.
What Is Bespoke?
True bespoke tailoring means a garment made entirely for you. A new pattern is cut from scratch based on your measurements, your posture, and your preferences. The fabric is hand-cut and the garment hand-assembled over 50-80 hours of work. Expect two to three fittings over 8-12 weeks.
Made-to-measure, by contrast, starts from an existing pattern that's adjusted to your measurements. It's faster and cheaper but lacks the precision and individuality of full bespoke.
