Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, and the final day before the start of Lent. Lent is a 40 day period before Easter, in which some people fast or give something up such as chocolate or sugar. Because of this, Pancake Day is traditionally a day for people to use up baking ingredients such as eggs, sugar and flour to make delicious pancakes, and enjoy their final day of indulging before the fast. Although this is an old, religious tradition, it is still extremely popular today with most people around the world, religious or not. Many restaurants will even serve Pancake Day specials in which they serve different variations of sweet or savoury pancakes.
